10 shot dead at Cape Town shisanyama - IOL

Police are looking for the gunmen behind the deadly shooting at a shisanyama in Lwandle, Cape Town, on Sunday morning.

Ten people were shot dead at a shisanyama in Cape Town on Sunday morning, mere hours after 17 were killed in a tavern shooting near Carletonville in Gauteng. 

This brings the death toll from the two shootings to 27 in the space of a few hours.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said gunmen walked into the Lwandle venue, an entertainment spot that also sells braaied meat, at about 1.46am and opened fire on patrons.

Five people died at the scene, and five more died later after being taken to hospital, while 11 others were being treated for their injuries.

"Detectives are hard at work in search of the perpetrators of the shooting incident with no arrests effected yet," Potelwa said.

"The identities of the deceased persons will be released once their next of kin are informed."

Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi set up a team drawn from several units and led by serious and violent crime detectives to investigate the killings.

Lwandle police opened cases of murder and attempted murder.

In Gauteng, police launched a manhunt on Sunday for eight men who opened fire at a tavern in Wedela, near Carletonville on the West Rand, at about 9.30pm on Saturday.

Police said the gunmen, armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols, shot at patrons drinking outside before going into the tavern and shooting the people inside.

Paramedics declared 13 men and four women dead at the scene, and 15 people with gunshot wounds were taken to hospital, police said.

No arrests had been made, and the motive for the shooting was not immediately known.
