2 killed as train hits autorickshaw in Satkania
A train has struck an autorickshaw at a railway crossing in Chattogram’s Satkania, killing its driver and a passenger and triggering protests that disrupted rail services.
The crash occurred at the East Kathgarg Rail Crossing in Kaliayish Union on Sunday.
The victims were Abu Taher, 50, and Abdus Shukkur, 40.
Taher was travelling in the battery-powered autorickshaw and Shukkur was driving.
Sujon Kanti Dey, chief of Chattogram Railway Police Station, told bdnews24.com that the autorickshaw had entered the tracks when it was hit by the Tourist Express travelling from Chattogram to Cox’s Bazar.
Residents then staged a protest on the railway line, before police persuaded them to clear the tracks, Dey said.
The demonstration delayed the Prabal Express from Cox’s Bazar to Chattogram by two hours and 10 minutes and the Cox’s Bazar Express bound for Dhaka by one hour and 15 minutes, said Zafar Alam, assistant station master at Dohazari.
The Prabal Express was scheduled to pass Dohazari at 2:08pm but crossed at 4:10pm. The Cox’s Bazar Express, due at 3:30pm, passed at 4:45pm.
