2 women die after C-sections in Rajasthan's Bundi, operation theatre sealed
Two women who underwent caesarean section at the District Women's Hospital in Rajasthan's Bundi died later at separate private hospitals in Kota, officials said on Friday. After the deaths, authorities sealed the operation theatre at the Bundi hospital for sampling, sterilisation and culture testing, and a female gynaecologist at the facility was relieved of her current duties and placed under awaiting posting orders.
Officials said two other women developed similar complications at the Bundi hospital on Thursday and were referred to the Government Medical College in Kota, where their condition was stable on Friday. Ten other women with high-risk pregnancies are currently admitted to the Bundi hospital for delivery.
Kavita Kumawat, 32, from Tonk district, and Varsha Sain, 28, from Bundi district, were admitted to the District Women's Hospital on Tuesday. They underwent C-section on Wednesday and delivered babies. While the babies were reported to be in good health, the condition of both women deteriorated shortly after surgery, following which they were referred to the Government Medical College in Kota. Their family members later shifted them to separate private hospitals in Kota, where they died during treatment late on Wednesday afternoon.
Two other patients from Bundi district, Jeenet, 20, and Pinky, 23, faced similar complications at the Bundi hospital on Thursday and were referred to the Government Medical College in Kota. L N Meena, principal medical officer at the Bundi hospital, confirmed that Chandresh Meena, who performed the C-sections on Kavita and Varsha, has been placed under awaiting posting orders. He said a three-member inquiry committee headed by the Bundi SDM, and including the chief medical and health officer and the head of gynaecology at the hospital, has been formed to investigate the matter.
Officials said the operation theatre has been sealed for at least two days to allow sampling and infection control procedures aimed at checking possible hospital-acquired infections or surgical complications. Meena said if any of the 10 high-risk pregnant women currently admitted to the hospital need an emergency C-section during this period, arrangements will be made either to use the general operation theatre or to refer them to Kota. The families of Kavita and Varsha have demanded an impartial investigation into the deaths, strict action against those responsible, and compensation of Rs 50 lakh in each case.
