2027: Adebayo promises premium pay for teachers - The Guardian Nigeria News
Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has promised to overhaul Nigeria’s teaching profession and make teachers among the most valued workers in the country.
Adebayo said the education crisis could not be solved by building schools alone.
He argued that the welfare, motivation and professional standing of teachers must become central to government policy.
The SDP candidate made the remarks in his message to Nigerian teachers, marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
In a statement signed by the Head, Directorate of Media and Communications.
Adebayo-Bugaje Presidential Campaign, Mark Adebayo, he identified poor remuneration, inadequate facilities and delayed entitlements as major challenges facing educators.
Adebayo said his proposed administration would introduce better salaries, allowances and pensions for teachers.
“We cannot expect a 21st-century educational miracle from 19th-century infrastructure and demoralised personnel,” he said.
He also promised to introduce more technology into classrooms, upgrade laboratories and provide modern teaching tools.
The campaign described the proposals as part of a three-pronged education revolution. Adebayo said the plan would also restore the professional dignity, autonomy and social standing of teachers at all levels.
He linked teachers’ welfare to Nigeria’s broader development, noting their role in producing professionals and leaders across sectors.
The SDP candidate also recalled the formation of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in 1931.
He said the union’s history reflected the longstanding contribution of Nigerian teachers to national development and the defence of their profession.
