A total of 4,197 motorists were caught using mobile phones while driving during a special enforcement drive conducted by Hyderabad Traffic Police from November 1 to November 7.

Of those caught, 4,038 were two-wheeler riders, 38 were three-wheeler drivers and 121 were four-wheeler drivers, according to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis.

The traffic police said using mobile phones while driving caused cognitive, visual and manual distractions, reducing attention, slowing reaction times and impairing judgement, thereby increasing the risk of accidents.

Hyderabad Traffic Police said they had adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards mobile phone use while driving and would continue conducting special enforcement drives regularly. The public has been asked to avoid using mobile phones while driving and follow traffic rules to ensure road safety.
