56 dead as heavy rains lash Uttar Pradesh

Fifty-six people have been killed in powerful thunderstorms and rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh since Friday (September 25, 2026), with at least eight districts facing a flood-like situation after an intense three-day wet spell, officials said. The State received 45.1 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending Sunday (September 27), against the normal 1.8 mm.
The highest number of deaths during the 60 hours were reported from Sitapur, followed by Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Balrampur, Ayodhya and Gorakhpur. The officials said 1,021 houses were damaged. People from flood-affected areas were shifted to relief centres and shelter homes, according to the office of the Relief Commissioner.
As per the State government’s statement, the water levels of the Ghagra and Rapti rivers are rising at several monitoring stations, posing a flood threat to low-lying areas.
“In view of the continuous heavy rainfall and the flood situation arising from it in Uttar Pradesh, officials have been directed to provide immediate relief and assistance to affected people. Compensation should be provided immediately, as per the rules, in cases of loss of human life and livestock caused by excessive rainfall. Admissible compensation should be provided at the earliest to people whose houses have collapsed due to the rains,” said an official statement.
At Elginbridge in Barabanki, the Ghagra was flowing at 106.14 metres at 8 a.m. on Sunday (September 27), above its danger level of 106.07 metres. The water level is likely to rise further to 106.55 metres by Sunday night. In Ayodhya, the river water level stood at 92.39 metres against the warning level of 91.73 metres and was forecast to rise to 92.85 metres.
Field officers have been directed to assess crop damage and provide compensation to affected farmers at the earliest. “The Chief Minister instructed officials to carry out relief operations in rain- and flood-affected areas with full seriousness so that no affected family has to face hardship during this difficult situation,” the government statement said.
