Officials of the drugs wing of the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) seized 6,368 capsules containing Tramadol, a habit-forming opioid drug, from a medical shop in Tellapur. They were allegedly found to be stocked without purchase bills and sold without prescriptions or sale bills.
TG SAFE officials raided Sri Ganesh Medical and General Stores in Tellapur village, Ramchandrapuram mandal of Sangareddy district, following information about the alleged illegal sale.
During the inspection, officials found Pyeevon Spas Plus capsules containing Tramadol being sold indiscriminately, TG SAFE said. A total of 6,368 capsules from a particular batch, valued at ₹58,904, were seized.
Tramadol is an opioid analgesic prescribed for the management of moderate to severe pain and is classified as a Schedule H1 drug. Such medicines can be sold only against a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner. TG SAFE said illegal diversion and misuse of Tramadol could lead to dependence and serious health consequences.
The raid was conducted by Patancheru Assistant Director P. Ramu, Patancheru Drugs Inspector M. Chandrasekhar and Sangareddy Drugs Inspector N. Ravikiran Reddy.
The agency said further investigation would be conducted to identify all those involved. Illegal diversion of habit-forming medicines by medical shops is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act with imprisonment of up to two years.
TG SAFE also asked the public to report suspected illegal sale or manufacture of medicines, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances through its toll-free number 1800-599-6969 between 10.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on working days.
