A few TJ Maxx stores have closed in 2026, but more are opening
TJ Maxx shoppers in Maryland and Massachusetts may have lost their favorite nearby locations but – big picture – the discount retailer has a more prominent footprint now than at the beginning of 2026.
A total of 11 net new TJ Maxx stores have opened in the first half of The TJX Company's fiscal 2027 year, which ended August 1, 2026, according to the company, which also operates Marshalls, HomeGoods, Homesense, and Sierra stores. And additional TJ Maxx locations will be opened during the second half of the fiscal year, the company says.
Five new TJ Maxx stores opened in August, one each in Arkansas, Montana, Ohio, Oregon and Virginia. In addition to a September opening in Iowa, nine more stores are set before or on Nov. 1.
Recent media reports have focused on a trio of 2026 TJ Maxx closings, two in Maryland and one in Boston. The company told USA TODAY it doesn't have any additional upcoming store closures, beyond those three closings.
The TJX Company had 1,359 TJ Maxx stores as of Aug. 1, according to its second quarter earnings report. That is five more than the company had at the beginning of the quarter.
The TJX Company, which currently has more than 5,300 stores in 10 countries, plans to continue opening new stores including new TJ Maxx locations over the coming months, the company said in a statement to USA TODAY.
"In the first half of Fiscal 2027, we opened 71 net new stores across our global retail banners, including 11 net new TJ Maxx stores, and expect to continue adding stores in the back half of the year," the company said in a statement. "Further, in August, we announced that we are planning to accelerate our store openings to 4% starting next year and that we believe we can grow our overall global store base to a total of 7,500 stores in our existing retail banners in our current countries over the long term."
These locations are set to open, according to T.J. Maxx's "Grand Openings" page:
CBS News reported the closure of the TJ Maxx on Newbury Street in Boston, while Montgomery County, Maryland news site The MoCoShow reported the closing of a TJ Maxx in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the Cumberland (Md.) Times News reported the closure of a location in the northwestern Maryland town.
