A sub-adult male elephant, aged about 10 to 12 years, was found dead at Ichavadi village in the Shankara Range of Shivamogga Division on Saturday (November 7, 2026).Β
Officials suspect the animal was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live electric wire along the edge of a paddy field.
Officers from the Shankara Range and Shivamogga Division visited the spot. During the preliminary inquiry, they questioned Alimiya, a resident of the village, according to a press communique issued by the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Shivamogga Division.
The suspect told the officers that he had erected a fence and connected it to a power supply to protect his ripening paddy crop from wild boar. A case has been registered under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
The Forest Department has also asked MESCOM officials to initiate action against the accused under the Electricity Act. The statement added that the carcass will be disposed of in accordance with the standard operating procedure.
