Details are beginning to emerge about the accident that occurred yesterday in Spain at 8:54 a.m. local time when two high-speed trains collided.

El Paris, one of Spain’s leading newspapers, shared radio communication recordings between the train engineers and the station manager at Madrid Atocha Central Station during the accident, which claimed the lives of 68 people and left more than 50 passengers injured, 15 of them seriously.

According to the reports, a system failure occurred at Urda Train Station, one of the control points on the Madrid-Andalusia line. As a result, all trains on the route came to a halt. Due to the system failure, the Madrid Atocha Main Control Center took over the duties of Urda Train Station.

According to the audio recordings, two conversations took place between the engineer of the stationary Iryo train and the control operator at Atocha, as well as one conversation between the engineer of the following AVE train and the same control operator.

The technician in charge at Atocha ordered the AVE train—located 25 kilometers behind the Iryo train—to resume “normal operation” rather than remain “within sight,” as specified in the protocol, with a speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour.

He did this without checking whether there was another train blocking the track ahead. The Iryo train’s engineer also received the order to continue at “normal speed” but reported that the train was still stopped 7 minutes later because he could not restart it. Despite this, the AVE train was instructed to continue at normal speed. The horrific accident occurred because no warning was issued during the 5 minutes between the Iryo engineer’s report that the train was still stopped and the moment of impact.

The transcript of the conversations, as published in the El País newspaper, is as follows.

-Yes -At 8:36 a.m. -Yes -Train driver of train No. 2080. Turn off the LZB and turn it back on. Continue driving. Then continue driving at normal speed under BSL protection. -At normal speed? -Yes.

8:41 a.m.: First communication with Iryo

-Good morning, Atocha. I lost the signal while traveling through the BSL. The train ahead of me is traveling at over 200 on Track 113. However, I couldn’t receive the signal. I’m currently stopped at the Urda entrance.

Statements were taken from all employees at the ADIF railway main control center at Madrid’s Atocha train station, where gross negligence was revealed in the train crash near Toledo, Spain.

As one day has passed since the train crash near Toledo, Spain, search and rescue operations continued throughout the night.

Heavy machinery and nearly a thousand personnel searched the illuminated crash site for bodies and injured passengers inside the train cars.

While all available resources—including helicopters, drones, and search dogs—were deployed, it was revealed that the train driver who lost his life on the AVE high-speed train was Antonio Acedo Meneses. It was noted that the 36-year-old driver’s grandfather and father were also railroad workers, which is why he chose to become a train driver himself. It was reported that trainee engineer David Cabanas had died in the accident.

Information centers for families were set up at the accident site and in the city of Toledo. However, relatives of the victims who are outside Spain or far from the accident site are still making appeals on social media to reach their loved ones.

Renfe, one of the companies involved in the accident, has suspended ticket sales for Madrid-Andalusia train services until December.
