'Aangan' returns to television nearly eight years after original run

Nearly eight years after its original television run, Aangan is making its way back to television, reviving a period drama remembered for its sprawling cast, complicated relationships and Partition-era setting. The channel announced the return on Instagram with a short teaser, hinting at the drama’s emotional legacy without revealing further details about the production. The announcement has brought the drama back into the conversation, particularly because of the familiar faces associated with the series. Sajal Aly, Ahad Raza Mir and Mawra Hocane were among its leading performers, while Ahsan Khan appeared in two roles.         View this post on Instagram                         Originally broadcast from December 2018 until June 2019, Aangan was adapted from Khadija Mastoor’s celebrated novel of the same name. Mustafa Afridi adapted the literary work for television, with Mohammed Ehteshamuddin directing the series. Rather than focusing solely on a single romance, the drama explored the lives of a family as personal relationships collided with the wider social and political changes of the period. The story was set against the turbulent years surrounding the Partition of the subcontinent. Mawra played Aaliya, a character whose experiences formed one of the central threads of the narrative. Her story unfolded within a complicated household where questions of love, family and changing social circumstances frequently intersected. The drama also brought together Mir and Sajal as Jameel and Chammi, respectively. Their characters became closely connected to the series’ romantic storyline, adding another emotional dimension to the wider family drama. Khan’s involvement was particularly notable, as he appeared as both Subhan and Safdar, giving the actor two distinct characters within the same production. The supporting ensemble was equally extensive. Hira Mani appeared as Tehmina, while Sonya Hussaiyn played Salma. Veteran actor Abid Ali took on the role of Muzaffar, with Zaib Rehman appearing as Khameera Illahi. Omair Rana was cast as Mazhar, while Madiha Rizvi played Aaliya’s mother. Shehroz Sabzwari, Rabia Butt, Uzma Baig and Hassan Noman were also part of the drama. One of the series’ defining features was its recreation of an earlier period, from its visual design and costumes to the social environment surrounding its characters. Its large cast allowed the story to move between personal relationships and the broader circumstances shaping the family. The production has not yet announced an exact date for the drama’s return. For now, the teaser has served as a reminder of a series that brought together some of Pakistan’s most recognisable television actors at an early stage of their careers.
