G. Ramesh, Sub-Inspector of Bazarhathnoor police station in Adilabad district.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday caught a Sub-Inspector of Bazarhathnoor police station in Adilabad district while accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 from a complainant in connection with a case involving the suicidal death of an unmarried woman.
The accused officer was identified as G. Ramesh. According to the ACB, he had demanded money in exchange for not implicating the complainant in the case registered over the woman’s death and returning his mobile phone, which had been retained by the officer.
The deceased woman had reportedly made her last phone call to the complainant before her death. Taking advantage of this, Ramesh allegedly threatened to implicate him in the case and demanded illegal gratification. He initially sought ₹50,000 but reduced the demand to ₹40,000 after the complainant requested him to lower the amount.
During the trap proceedings on November 4, Ramesh met the complainant near an under-construction petrol bunk on the outskirts of the village and instructed him to place the money beneath the centring boxes at the location. The complainant did so as directed, following which the ACB caught the officer.
The ACB said the officer had misused his official position to obtain undue advantage. He was being arrested and would be produced before the Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases in Karimnagar for judicial remand.
The case is under investigation. The ACB withheld the complainant’s identity for security reasons.
