Accounting course equips armed forces personnel for post-retirement careers

Thirty-nine serving personnel of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, all due to retire by March 2027, have completed a Certificate of Accounting Technician (CAT) course in Kozhikode, aimed at equipping them for employment in the accounting sector after their retirement.

The four-month course was conducted under the Directorate General of Resettlement (DGR), Ministry of Defence, and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) as part of an initiative to expand post-service employment opportunities for armed forces personnel beyond conventional jobs in security and home guards.

The course was conducted by the Kozhikode-Malappuram Chapter of ICMAI. The 39 successful candidates included 27 personnel from the Army, nine from the Navy, and three from the Air Force.

According to project coordinators, the course was designed to provide serving personnel with professional skills that could help them secure employment and a regular income after retirement. The participants were also granted four months’ leave to undergo the training. Similar skill-development courses are being offered in different States under the DGR initiative, they said. 

The closing ceremony and certificate distribution were held at Hotel Hyson Heritage here on Friday (September 11). Vishnu E.G., Commanding Officer, Naval Unit NCC, Kozhikode, was the guest of honour. He congratulated the candidates and appreciated the initiative to provide professional and skill-oriented training to armed forces personnel.

Commander Rahil, Joint Director, DGR, addressed the participants virtually and stressed the importance of continuous professional development and acquiring additional skills during service to improve career prospects after retirement. K.P. Adarsh, chairman, Kozhikode-Malappuram Chapter of ICMAI, faculty members, and course coordinators attended the function.
