The authorities at the University of Calicut have proposed to act against the use of political party flags and the storage of weapons at hostels on the main campus of the University of Calicut at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.
According to sources, the issue came up for discussion at a recent meeting of the board of adjudication of students’ grievances chaired by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran.
There were complaints about a section of students attacking another group with lethal weapons. There is a police case related to it, too. It had been alleged that certain students’ organisations were stocking weapons at the men’s hostel. There were also reports that flags of political organisations were a notable feature on the campus. It was also alleged that the members of certain organisations were behaving as if some hostel blocks were their fiefdoms and even the wardens permitted this. The authorities have warned that criminal action would be initiated against those who violate the hostel rules. The sources said on Saturday (October 3) that the board’s proposals would be conveyed to the Syndicate, which would take a final decision on the matter.
