After making a clean sweep of elections to four Legislative Council seats along with the JD(S), the BJP has now set its sights on the byelection to the Hiriyur Assembly constituency.

Disclosing this to media persons in Bengaluru after the party’s State office-bearers’ meeting, BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra said the NDA partners would now want to win the Hiriyur Assembly byelection. “We will discuss the issue with JD(S) leader and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy soon,” he said.

According to him, the issue was deliberated at an informal meeting of the party’s State core committee held to mark the maiden visit of BJP national general secretary and State in-charge Harish Dwivedi after taking over the new responsibility.

At the State office-bearers’ meeting, Mr. Dwivedi maintained that there was already anguish against the Congress government among the people, which was evident from the NDA partners making a clean sweep of the Council polls, he said. Mr. Dwivedi suggested that the BJP should take up campaigns on pro-people issues to strengthen its organisation.

Observing that the next Assembly elections were not far away, he told party leaders to focus on the forthcoming local body elections as well.

Mr. Vijayendra said the party would launch its “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy” campaign from Kolar on Tuesday to counter what he described as a conspiracy by the Congress and its supporters to defame the Narendra Modi government through false propaganda. He said Mr. Dwivedi, he and other senior leaders were set to participate in the padayatra being taken out in Kolar.

Mr. Dwivedi, who is on a three-day visit to the State, is set to take part in a similar campaign in Chitradurga on Wednesday before winding up his visit.
