The newly appointed Pro-Chancellor of Summit University, Offa, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has urged stakeholders of Summit University, Offa, Kwara State, to work together to move the institution to greater heights. Fagbemi, who is the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, made the call on Tuesday during his maiden visit to the institution, where he attended a Governing Council meeting and inspected some of its major facilities. The AGF said the progress recorded by the university was encouraging but noted that more work was required to position the institution among the leading universities in the country. “I am impressed with what I have seen so far. There has been remarkable progress, and I commend the efforts that have gone into getting the university to this level. Meanwhile, there is still a lot to be done. We have to consolidate on what has been achieved and see how we can take the university to greater heights”, he said. The Pro-Chancellor said he was prepared to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor, stressing that achieving the university’s aspirations would require the involvement of all stakeholders. He called for greater synergy among the Governing Council, Board of Trustees, management, staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders. “Everybody has a role to play. The council has its responsibility, the management has its own responsibility, just as the staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders have their roles to play,” he said. The visit marked Fagbemi’s first official engagement with the university since his appointment on July 10, 2026 and provided an opportunity for him to assess its facilities, operations and ongoing development projects. During the facility tour, Fagbemi inspected some of the university’s infrastructure and other facilities, expressing satisfaction with the level of development. He said the university had laid a foundation capable of supporting further growth, adding that his focus would be on working with the relevant stakeholders to strengthen the institution. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Nurudeen Adeagbo, said Fagbemi’s appointment was based largely on his willingness and demonstrated commitment to the development of the university. He added that the university was confident that the new Pro-Chancellor would contribute meaningfully to its administration and development. The Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II, expressed delight over Fagbemi’s appointment, describing him as a “good man and a philanthropist par excellence”, he added. The monarch described Summit University as one of his notable achievements and expressed optimism that it would become one of the best universities in Nigeria. “I am particularly happy with the choice of Fagbemi as the Pro-Chancellor of this university. I know him as a good man and someone who has the capacity to contribute to the development of the institution. Summit University is one of my achievements, and I am confident that, with the right support, this university will soon be among the best in Nigeria. All of us must continue to support the university because its success is important not only to Offa but also to the development of education and the economy of our people”, he said. The Visitor to the university, Musediq Kazeem, SAN, represented by Alhaji Najeemudeen Yasin, said the appointment of Fagbemi followed a deliberate effort to secure the right leadership for the institution.  He said, “A lot of effort went into the selection of the new Pro-Chancellor. It was a deliberate decision to bring the right leadership and experience to the university at this critical stage of its development.” He expressed confidence in Fagbemi’s ability to contribute to the transformation of the institution. Receiving the AGF, the Vice-Chancellor of Summit University, Musa Aibinu, said the management was ready to work with the new Pro-Chancellor and the Governing Council to consolidate the gains recorded by the institution. “We welcome the Pro-Chancellor to Summit University and look forward to working closely with him and the Governing Council to move the university forward. “The management, staff and members of the university community are ready to give the Pro-Chancellor all the support and cooperation required to achieve the objectives of the institution. “We will continue to prioritise academic excellence, infrastructure development, research and innovation, as well as providing an environment that supports effective teaching and learning,” he said. Aibinu emphasised that the combined efforts of the Governing Council, Board of Trustees, management and other stakeholders would be necessary to achieve the university’s long-term aspirations.
