AI cannot replace judicial conscience, says Telangana HC judge

Artificial intelligence can augment judicial intelligence but cannot replace judicial conscience or the judicial mind, said Telangana High Court judge Justice Surepalli Nanda, adding that the technology should enable courts to discharge their constitutional responsibilities more effectively.
The 15th Annual Legal Era India Conclave 2026 held recently brought together members of the judiciary, bar, corporate legal fraternity and technology sector in Hyderabad for discussions on the evolving role of law in business, technology, innovation and governance.
Addressing a session on ‘Law, Technology, Digital Infrastructure and Corporate Leadership’, Justice Nanda also highlighted the emergence of techno-legal professionals, stating that lawyers of the future would need an understanding of AI governance, cybersecurity, data protection and technology regulation. She stressed the need for an interdisciplinary approach to legal education to prepare lawyers for a rapidly changing technological environment.
The day-long conclave, organised by the Legal Era team under the leadership of Aakriti Raizada, featured interactions among members of the judiciary, bar, corporate legal fraternity and industry. Senior advocate Krishna Grandhi, Medicover Hospitals chief legal officer Isha Sinha, Nitin Sharma of Qualcomm and Special government pleader Divya Adepu were among those who attended.
Awards recognising leading in-house legal professionals and teams were presented during the event.
