AJKEC officially notifies four unopposed AJK Council members

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission (AJKEC) on Friday officially notified four members elected “unopposed” to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council. According to a notification issued by the commission, the four members were declared elected on the basis of poll results received from the respective returning officers. The elected members have been identified as Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas, Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed and Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed alongside Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Chaudhry Latif Akbar. The AJKEC formally published the names of the four elected members under Section 18 of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Council (Election) Act, 1976. Copies of the notification have also been sent to the relevant authorities, the AJK Legislative Assembly Secretariat, Information Department and other concerned institutions. Its four seats had fallen vacant following the expiry of the five-year terms of their previous occupants. The AJKEC had initially scheduled polling for October 12, but with four candidates filing nominations for the vacant seats, the members were declared “elected unopposed” following the completion of the poll process. The AJK Council is a constitutional body established under the AJK Interim Constitution Act of 1974. It provides an institutional link between the governments of Pakistan and AJK, with its composition and functions defined by the constitutional framework.
