Alex Bregman shared a gruesome update after taking foul ball to the face - USA Today

Alex Bregman was hospitalized on Sunday after he was struck by a foul ball under the eye in a freak accident. And that aftermath is looking awfully gruesome for the Cubs third baseman.

Bregman was standing in the on-deck circle as left-handed hitter Michael Busch fouled off a 97 mph fastball from Reds pitcher Luis Mey. The ball ricochetted off the dirt on the check swing and still went towards Bregman with plenty of velocity.

Bregman ran towards the dugout, covering his face. Trainers immediately attended to him with towels to deal with the bleeding, and he made his way into the clubhouse at Great American Ball Park. After the game, Bregman shared a photo from the injury on Instagram, and the swelling still hadn't subsided much as he returned to Chicago.

He wrote on his initial Instagram Story. "Thanks for all the messages yall. I'll be back." In the Monday photo, he confirmed that he was back in Chicago.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters that Bregman went to the hospital for a CT scan and additional testing. It's unclear how much time he'll miss as the postseason looms. Via MLB.com:

“I don’t know anything more than that. He had a cut under his eye. He was bleeding from his nose a little bit. It’s pretty swollen. It was below the eye. I honestly thought it hit him in the nose. I thought he had a broken nose, but I knew it hit him somewhere in the face. It’s just an unfortunate accident. I’m hoping and praying he is all right.

“We have to get good results from the hospital first. [Bregman] got hit in the face, so you are worried about his general well-being first. If we get a good report, we’ll move to the next step. I want to get a good report.”      ​

Update: Bregman was diagnosed with multiple facial fractures.
