Algeria Expands Economic Ties After Severing Relations With UAE - Tempo.co English
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Algeria took swift steps to strengthen bilateral ties and explore economic cooperation with various countries after severing diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As quoted by ANTARA, Algeria’s Embassy in Jakarta released a statement on Friday saying the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Minister of State and Minister of Oil and Gas Mohamed Arkab held a video conference with Bangladesh's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hassan Mahmood on Thursday, September 10.
The two ministers discussed potential partnerships between Algeria's state-owned oil and gas company, Sonatrach, and Bangladeshi companies in liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and petroleum products. They also discussed the development of related infrastructure.
On the same day, Kamel Rezig, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, and Laziz Kudratov, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry, and Trade, held a virtual meeting to discuss establishing a joint business council.
Both parties agreed to expand this cooperation to strengthen direct communication between economic stakeholders in both countries, thereby fostering investment and partnership opportunities and supporting the implementation of joint economic and commercial projects.
The two ministers discussed ways to strengthen bilateral economic and trade relations and exchanged ideas on how to increase and diversify trade volume in line with both countries' economic potential.
In addition to strengthening economic cooperation, Algeria is working with Oman to enhance regional stability.
Algeria's Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, spoke by phone on Thursday with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi.
They discussed various issues of mutual interest, particularly the evolving situation in the region. They reaffirmed their support for efforts to de-escalate tensions and prioritize diplomatic solutions to maintain security and stability in the region.
Previously, Algeria’s government announced on Thursday that it had decided to sever diplomatic relations with the UAE after "running out of options" to maintain bilateral ties.
Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as reported by the Algeria Press Service, stated that it consistently exercises "restraint" and maintains a strong sense of "responsibility" in responding to "provocative or hostile" actions by the UAE.
