Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu during the Swarnandhra-Swachhandhra Awards-2026 programme in Vijayawada on Friday.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday called for participation of the five-crore people in making cleanliness a social movement, saying sanitation was not merely the responsibility of the government.
Addressing the Swarnandhra-Swachhandhra Awards-2026 programme here on Gandhi Jayanti, Mr. Naidu said Mahatma Gandhi had demonstrated that cleanliness was essential for public health and social well-being.
He said the State had been observing the Swarnandhra-Swachhandhra programme on the third Saturday of every month and claimed that visible changes were noticed across the State over the past two years.
The Chief Minister said 130 State-level and 2,044 district-level awards were being presented in 22 categories to encourage municipalities, gram panchayats, schools, hospitals, bus stations, industries, sanitation workers and green ambassadors.
He said the government was working towards “zero garbage” by promoting waste collection, mechanised road sweeping, integrated solid waste management centres, compost pits, Gobardhan and plastic waste management units. Waste was being converted into manure, biogas and electricity, he said.
Mr. Naidu said the government was implementing the Net-Zero concept in schools, colleges and hostels, and had signed an MoU with IIT-Kanpur for the purpose. He said the city climate action plans would be implemented and steps taken to treat and reuse wastewater.
He said the government planned to spend ₹1.30 lakh crore on rural development over the next five years and had initiated plans to develop Rayalaseema into a horticulture hub with an investment of ₹1 lakh crore.
Calling for increased green cover, the Chief Minister urged people to plant trees and promote electric vehicles and green energy. He said every school, panchayat and municipality would be ranked on cleanliness, and public feedback would be obtained to improve the system.
Awards were presented to several municipalities, gram panchayats, schools, hospitals, hostels, bus stations and temples, including the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam and Simhachalam temple.
