A SAPS vehicle lies overturned after colliding with a Toyota Yaris near Mew Way in Khayelitsha.

A South African Police service van was involved in a road accident and flipped on its roof on Sunday, 13 September 2026. 

Images taken of the crash site showed the cop van on its dak.

Following an accident at an intersection on Mew Way in Khayelitsha, the police van can be seen on its roof in the road. 

Its windows were shattered and two other police vans are on the scene, with officers investigating the accident’s aftermath. 

Western Cape police confirmed the accident, which involved a Toyota Yaris. 

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala reported: “This office confirms that Khayelitsha police opened a case of reckless and negligent driving following an accident that occurred at a robot controlled intersection near Mew Way, on Sunday 13 September 2026 at about 12.45pm. 

“A police marked vehicle collided with a Toyota Yaris and overturned. 

“One SAPS member sustained a slight injury on the shoulder and is receiving medical treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”

An overturned cop van has become a familiar sight on the metro's highway in recent months.

Two such incidents occurred as recently as June and July, with both incidents coincidentally reported on Stellenbosch Arterial. 

An Independent Media photojournalist was on the scene on Wednesday, 24 June where another cop van was out of commission at the intersection of Stellenbosch Arterial and the R300, near Wesbank.  

At the time, the Daily Voice enquiries to the police focused on the cause of the accident and why a vehicle assigned to Grassy Park was operating on the other side of the city.    

Gwala reported then: “Kindly be advised that Mfuleni police registered a case of reckless and negligent driving following an accident that occurred at Stellenbosch Arterial Road on Wednesday 24 June 2026 at about 9.50am. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”

Gwala said: “This office confirms that Belhar police registered a case of reckless and negligent driving following an accident that occurred at the intersection of Stellenbosch Arterial and Symphony Way on Monday 27 July 2026 at about 11.30am

“Two SAPS members sustained slight injuries and were transported to a medical facility for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”
