Are portable washers and dryers worth the money?

If you’ve ever lived in a studio apartment, a small house, or a place without laundry hookups, you’ve probably eyed a portable washer and dryer online at least once. They promise the convenience of in-unit laundry without the space (or plumbing) a full-size setup demands. But do these smaller appliances actually get your clothes clean? And what about the drain on your plumbing and electricity, not to mention the bills?

I spoke with appliance experts to find out what portable washers and dryers can realistically do, where they fall short, and whether they’re worth the investment.

The short answer is yes — with some caveats. “Portable washers and dryers can be as effective as regular-sized ones, provided that you’re using them for smaller loads,” says Dennis Godynuk, an appliance technician and owner of Comfort Appliance Repair in Nashville, Tenn. In other words, if you’re washing everyday clothes in smaller quantities, you shouldn’t notice much of a difference in cleaning performance compared to a full-size machine.

But where portable models can fall short is capacity and convenience. “They are essentially smaller versions of their regular-sized counterparts, which means they have smaller load capacity and may not be able to accommodate bulky items like blankets,” Godynuk explains. He also points out a common drawback with portable dryers specifically: “Some dryers may take a longer time to dry clothes because they lack vents.”

That means bigger items like comforters or bulky winter coats may need a trip to the laundromat, and dry time for everyday loads could run longer than you’re used to.

I asked appliance experts what shoppers should keep in mind before buying a portable washer and dryer. Here’s what they said to consider:

Portable laundry appliances aren’t the right fit for everyone. “Large households should avoid these compact appliances,” says Godynuk. “The same goes for those who often wash bulky items.” In other words, if you’re regularly doing laundry for a family of four or more, or if your routine involves comforters, sleeping bags, or heavy blankets, a portable setup will likely leave you frustrated and running more loads than you’d like.

On the other hand, portable washers and dryers can be a great solution for the right living situation. “They’re best suited for people living in apartments, smaller homes or other spaces where a full-size laundry setup won’t fit,” says Glenn Lewis, president of Mr. Appliance, an appliance repair franchise. “These designs can provide useful laundry capabilities without requiring as much room.”

For singles, couples, or small households in space-constrained homes, that trade-off between capacity and convenience is often worth it.

When it comes to washers and dryers, the words “portable” and “compact” are often used interchangeably but they’re actually not the same thing; the key difference comes down to installation. Compact machines are smaller versions of standard laundry appliances, typically designed to fit into tight spaces like closets or stacked configurations, but they still need to be permanently hooked up to a home’s water supply, drain line, and electrical.

Portable machines, on the other hand, are built for flexibility and require no permanent installation: A portable washer usually connects temporarily to a sink faucet with hoses that you attach and detach with each use, and drains into the same sink or a bucket, while a portable dryer just needs to be plugged into a standard outlet and can be rolled or carried to wherever it’s needed.

In short, compact appliances save space but still function like built-in units, while portable appliances trade some capacity and speed for the ability to be moved around and used without any dedicated plumbing or venting, making them popular for apartments, RVs, or homes without laundry hookups.

Portable washers and dryers are generally efficient, though the details vary by machine and usage habits. Portable washers actually tend to use less water than full-size machines because of their smaller drum capacity — often using somewhere in the range of 5 to 20 gallons per load compared to the 15 to 30 gallons a standard washer might use — though you’ll need to run more loads if you’re washing for a full household.

Electricity use is also modest for washers, since most of the energy in laundry goes toward heating water, and many portable washers let you use water straight from the tap rather than heating it internally.

Most portable dryers are ventless and usually take longer to fully dry a load and can use more electricity per cycle as a result, according to experts.
