Army expands structure as 17 Brigade joins 1 Division - Punch Newspapers
The Nigerian Army has transferred 17 Brigade from 8 Division to the premier 1 Division as part of its ongoing restructuring aimed at strengthening command and improving operational effectiveness. The transfer, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was formally completed on October 2, 2026, following activities held on October 1 and 2. The development is part of the Army’s expansion from an eight-division to a 12-division structure, designed to improve operational coordination and enhance its response to emerging security threats, particularly in the North-West. In a post obtained from the Nigerian Army’s X handle on Sunday, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander of Sector 1 Joint Task Force, North West, Operation FANSAN YANMA, Major General Abubakar Saddique Muhammed Wase, said the realignment would strengthen the Army’s command structure. “This realignment will optimise our command architecture, improve operational fluidity, and sharpen our response to the evolving security threats in the North West,” Wase said. As part of his familiarisation activities, Wase on October 1 visited the newly established 83 Battalion in Malumfashi, where he received a briefing from the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel K.E. Odi. He also inspected ongoing construction work at the battalion’s permanent site in Lambun Kyauta. “I am impressed with the operational tempo and the progress on infrastructure. The troops must remain focused and combat-ready,” Wase told the troops.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google The Army commander later paid a courtesy visit to the District Head of Malumfashi and Galadima Katsina, Justice Saddiq Abdullahi Mahuta (rtd), where he emphasised the importance of collaboration between the military and traditional institutions in tackling insecurity. “Security is a collective responsibility. The support of traditional institutions remains critical to our success in intelligence gathering and community protection,” Wase said. Responding, Mahuta expressed appreciation for the Army’s efforts and pledged continued cooperation with security agencies. The formal handover ceremony took place on October 2 at Natsinta Cantonment, Katsina, where Wase and the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, jointly conducted the handing and taking over of the brigade. Commander of 17 Brigade, Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim, gave a historical briefing on the formation, which was established in 2016 and operationalised on February 22, 2018. “The 17 Brigade has a rich legacy of service. We are proud of what we have achieved and ready for the next chapter under 1 Division,” Ibrahim said. Both GOCs subsequently signed the official Handing and Taking Over Notes, formally concluding the brigade’s tenure under 8 Division. The ceremony featured a tree-planting exercise at the Headquarters 17 Brigade Complex and a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of fallen soldiers. Koughna said the transfer marked a new phase for the brigade while maintaining its institutional identity. “Today marks the formal conclusion of 17 Brigade’s tenure under 8 Division and the beginning of a new era under 1 Division, while preserving its distinct institutional heritage,” he said. The ceremony ended with a flag parade, during which the 8 Division and old 17 Brigade flags were lowered, while the 1 Division flag and the new 17 Brigade flag were hoisted. Addressing the troops afterwards, Wase charged them to maintain discipline and remain combat-ready as they take on their responsibilities under the new command structure. “Maintain the highest standards of discipline and combat readiness. The security of our people depends on your professionalism and dedication,” he said.
