The former head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (Idac), Andrea Johnson, and a former top police officer with the rank of major-general have been arrested by members of the Madlanga commission’s investigative task team.

Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk confirmed the arrests on Friday. She did not name the pair but sources earlier disclosed that Johnson was one of those arrested.

They will face charges related to defeating the ends of justice, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm as well as contraventions of the National Prosecuting Act, Van Wyk said.

“This emanates from an incident that took place on June 26 2018, wherein the former major-general from the South African Police Service (SAPS) had allegedly assaulted a brigadier under his command. She sustained injuries and she subsequently opened an assault with intent to cause criminal bodily harm case at the Silverton Police Station.

“The investigation has so far has revealed that one of the suspects, the female suspect, a former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) employee at the time, had [allegedly] interfered with the particular case that was reported at Silverton.”

The duo is expected to appear before the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Friday afternoon.

Van Wyk said they cannot rule out further arrests in the matter as investigations continue.
