As Rekha Gupta, S Jaishankar gets SIR notices, what Delhi minister said

Amid heightening concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said all voters whose records have not been mapped to the previous revision will receive SIR notices, asserting that the process does not discriminate between people on the basis of their financial status.

His remarks come amid a growing row over the notices being issued to voters during the ongoing revision exercise, with several prominent names, including Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also appearing among those flagged for verification.

“This is the beauty of the process,” Sirsa said while speaking to Aaj Tak, India Today’s sister organisation. “It does not discriminate between the rich and the poor and treats everyone equally,” he added.

The minister also said that people who had stayed outside Delhi, registered their names elsewhere and later moved to the national capital would receive notices as they are unmapped voters. Dismissing concerns over the exercise, Sirsa urged people to provide all the necessary documents and information to the Election Commission of India (ECI) so that their records could be mapped.

As many as 33.13 lakh notices are being issued to Delhi voters over discrepancies in electoral details, including cases where records could not be linked to the electoral roll prepared during the previous revision.

The notices have brought several high-profile names into focus. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his wife Kyoko Jaishankar, former Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, CBI Director Praveen Sood and several serving and retired senior bureaucrats have received notices after their records could not be linked to the previous SIR roll or discrepancies were detected in their details.

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and four members of his family were also served notices under the “Unmapped with Last SIR” category. The five were among 110 voters flagged in a segment of Assembly Constituency 40, which covers the New Delhi constituency.

Former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, his daughter Pratibha Advani and daughter-in-law Geetika Advani have also received notices after their records could not be mapped to the 2002 SIR electoral roll. Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and members of his family were flagged over discrepancies in their electoral details.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had also received an SIR notice over an age-related discrepancy. Following physical verification by a Booth Level Officer, the Election Commission said her documents and electoral details had been verified, and her entry had been validated for inclusion in the final electoral roll.

The Election Commission has clarified that receiving an SIR notice does not by itself mean that a voter's name will be deleted from the electoral roll. Voters whose records cannot be linked or whose details contain discrepancies are required to respond and submit supporting documents to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer.
