ASI undertakes Dwarapala restoration at Thousand Pillar Temple in Telangana’s Hanumakonda

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Hyderabad Circle, on Monday (October 5, 2026) took up Dwarapala (Dwarapalaka) restoration and conservation works at the historic Thousand Pillar Temple in Hanumakonda as part of an initiative to preserve its valuable sculptural heritage.

The restoration is being undertaken in accordance with the principles of traditional iconometry and iconography to ensure that the correct proportions, posture, attributes and stylistic character of the Dwarapala sculptures are retained. Wherever replacement or mending is required, compatible stone matching the original in colour, texture, grain and physical characteristics is being selected and carefully dressed to blend with the existing sculpture, according to officials.

The intervention also includes the careful removal of deteriorated portions, preparation of sound contact surfaces, precision fitting, joint treatment and consolidation.

Alongside the conservation works, garden development and landscaping activities, including lawn development, hedging, plantation and improvement of pathways, are in progress at an estimated cost of about ₹1 crore to enhance the overall presentation of the monument and improve the visitor experience.

The work is being carried out under the technical guidance of ASI officials Krishna Chaitanya, Deputy Superintending Archaeological Engineer; P. Kishore Kumar Reddy, Assistant Superintending Archaeological Engineer; Mallesh, Conservation Assistant, and Ajith, Senior Conservation Assistant, under the supervision of Nihildas N., Superintending Archaeologist. Master sculptor Kaniyappan from ASI, Chennai, is associated with the project.

During his visit to the temple, M. Pandu Ranga Rao, retired professor of NIT and Kakatiya Heritage Trust (KHT), Trustee, appreciated ASI’s efforts towards the conservation, development and improved presentation of the Kakatiya era historic temple complex.

The ASI on July 31, 2026, commenced another phase of conservation works at the Kakatiya-era temple, taking up restoration of the remaining southern portico, repair of damaged stone sculptures and landscaping of the temple complex.

The works also include reconstruction of the unfinished southern portico, and landscaping to improve the temple surroundings while retaining the site’s heritage character.
