Assam is heading for a byelection for one of its parliamentary seats, Nagaon, on October 6, 2026. The four-way contest for the seat is between Congress, BJP, All India United Democratic Front(AIUDF), and the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The byelection to the Nagaon parliamentary seat was necessitated after Pradyut Bordoloi, who won in 2019 and 2024 as a Congress candidate, quit the party to join the BJP and contested the State polls in April this year. He was elected from the Dispur Assembly constituency.

The counting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll and five Assembly byelections, including the high-profile Nandigram in West Bengal, will be held on October 9.

Nagaon is a General parliamentary seat, which will witness a four-way contest. The key candidates include the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF)’s Badruddin Ajmal, and Congress' Sibamoni Bora, a former MLA. BJP has fielded former bureaucrat Devasish Sharma, while the Trinamool Congress has announced academic Abdul Salam as its candidate.

Devashish Sharma opted for voluntary retirement as the Nagaon District Commissioner on September 3 and joined the BJP. AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal is an MLA from central Assam’s Binnakandi constituency and a former three-time MP from Dhubri in western Assam.

The Nagaon parliamentary constituency covers Morigaon district and five of Nagaon district’s seven Assembly segments. Nagaon is the first major face-off between the principal combatants, BJP and Congress, since the former’s crushing sweep in the April Assembly election with 102 out of 126 seats for the National Democratic Alliance.

At the time of the 2011 census, it was the most populous district in Assam, but since Hojai district split, that title was lost to Dhubri, according to the Government of Assam’s website.

The campaigning for the byelection witnessed violence on September 22, after a scuffle broke out between the BJP and Congress party workers in Morigaon district of Nagaon.

According to reports, ruling party workers blocked the vehicle of Congress MLA Asif Nazar at Garoimari in Morigaon district. A scuffle between the workers of the two parties ensued. A day earlier, on September 21, BJP workers allegedly attacked the vehicles of Congress leaders who were travelling to Samaguri in adjoining Nagaon district for an election meeting. Among the leaders were State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.

The Congress party claimed that BJP supporters had pelted stones. Meanwhile, CM Himanta Sarma said the Samaguri clash was between rival factions within the Congress party.
