Assam Congress expels 15 leaders, workers for 3 years over indiscipline
The Assam Congress on Tuesday said 15 leaders and workers have been expelled from the party for three years for allegedly breaching party discipline. The action was announced in an order issued by the party.
The order was issued by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Barua on the direction of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi. It said the action was taken for violating Congress discipline and disregarding party directives.
Those expelled include Hashim Uddin Barbhuiya, Sujit Das, Puja Das, advocate Jasim Uddin Laskar and Hanif Uddin Barbhuiya. The order also named the party's Minority Department working president, Ali Reza Osmani.
Along with Osmani, Fatima Choudhury, Lovely Begum, Partha Roy, Malabika Choudhury, Biswatosh Nag and Nishith Das were also expelled with immediate effect. The party further said Silchar Zilla Parishad member Nur Islam Barbhuiya, former zonal town president Anupam Pal and Silchar Assembly constituency Youth Congress president Janmajay Choudhury have also been expelled.
Last week, tension was reported at the Cachar District Congress Bhawan over the selection of candidates for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election, as a section of unhappy Congress workers allegedly vandalised the chamber of district Congress president Sajal Acharya. The protest was linked to discontent over the party’s choice of candidate for Ward No. 27.
According to reports, workers who said they had been denied party tickets entered Acharya’s chamber and damaged office property. It was also alleged that the district Congress president’s chair was taken out of his chamber and placed outside during the protest.
The protesting workers were said to be opposing the party’s decision in Ward No. 27. They claimed that Partha Das had applied for the party ticket from the ward and that his name remained in the candidate selection panel until the afternoon of September 10.
The party, however, later decided to nominate Susmita Das from the ward, leading to protests by Partha Das’s supporters. During the agitation, former MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar was also reportedly surrounded by protesting workers who demanded an explanation for the candidate selection process.
Partha Das alleged that Cachar District Congress president Sajal Acharya, Silchar City Congress president Atanu Bhattacharya and former MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar were responsible for his being denied the party ticket. He also alleged that money changed hands in the distribution of party tickets and claimed that candidates were selected in exchange for money.
The allegations related to vandalism, the ticket selection process and the claimed financial transactions could not be independently verified. There was no immediate response available from the Congress leaders named in the allegations.
