A 26-year-old man accused in the death of a 21-year-old university student on September 25 was shot in the legs while he allegedly tried to escape from police custody on Tuesday (October 6, 2026).
The incident occurred at around 5.30 a.m., hours before Mr. Ali was to be produced in court after his eight-day police custody ended, police said.
Mr. Ali was accused of involvement in the unnatural death of Nimisha Thakuria, a Sociology student at Gauhati University. Her body was recovered from a homestay in Guwahati.
After the shooting, Mr. Ali was admitted to the Orthopaedics Department of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
Devajit Choudhury, Superintendent, GMCH, said the patient had two bullet injuries with entry and exit wounds. “One bullet struck the knee joint from behind and exited through the front, while the other caused an injury near the ankle joint. The blood vessels and nerves are intact,” he said, adding that Mr. Ali was out of danger.
Earlier, Guwahati Deputy Commissioner of Police Bolin Deuri said that during questioning, Mr. Ali acknowledged that he was in a relationship with the university student but claimed she hanged herself.
“A thorough investigation will reveal the truth,” Mr. Deuri said.
Details about the circumstances leading to the shooting were not immediately available.
