At least 15 people were killed and more than 50 injured in an explosion near a mosque in the Police Lines area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Kohat district on Friday, a medical official said.

According to police, the explosion occurred during Friday prayer and caused a crater outside the mosque, saying police personnel were among those injured.

They said that additional contingent of force was deployed in the Police Lines following the blast.

Rescue officials said that the blast severely damaged the mosque's outer section, while a wall also collapsed.

Rescue operations were being carried out at the site of the explosion, the officials added.

Meanwhile, authorities have closed the Kohat-Hangu Road to all traffic following the incident.

The administration of the DHQ in Kohat has imposed an emergency as injured people were brought in for treatment.

Hospital administration later said that at least 25 injured were brought to the hospital for treatment.
