Atletico Madrid Crush Osasuna 4-0, Climb to Third in La Liga - Tempo.co English
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Atletico Madrid put in a dominant performance, thrashing Osasuna 4-0 in a Spanish League match at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Thursday.
The goals for the home side were scored by Jonathan David, Lee Kang-in, Robin Le Normand, and Alex Baena.
Diego Simeone's team climbed to third place with 13 points, two points behind Real Madrid in second and league leaders Barcelona.
Meanwhile, Osasuna sit in 13th place with seven points, according to the La Liga website as cited by Antara.
Jonathan David opened the scoring for Atletico in the 24th minute. The Canadian forward found the net on the rebound after his initial shot—following a cut-back from Alejandro Grimaldo—was parried by Osasuna goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez.
Atletico had been pressing since the start of the match. Ademola Lookman headed a cross from Lee Kang-in over the bar, and shortly after, Fernandez denied an attempt by Lee.
Fernandez again came to Osasuna's rescue, making back-to-back saves to deny efforts from Lee and David. However, the goalkeeper was beaten again early in the second half.
Nine minutes after the break, Lee Kang-in doubled Atletico's lead. The South Korean player unleashed a powerful shot that Fernandez was unable to stop.
Atletico pulled further ahead in the 61st minute. Fernandez had managed to tip a fierce shot from Cristian Romero over the crossbar just moments earlier.
However, from the resulting corner kick, Robin Le Normand scored after his shot deflected off an opponent, changing direction before finding the top right corner.
Osasuna struggled increasingly to keep up with Atletico. Fernandez made another brilliant save to deny a curling shot from Lee from outside the penalty area.
Atletico scored their fourth goal in the 82nd minute. Johnny Cardoso played a brilliant through-ball behind the Osasuna defense, which Alex Baena finished off to score. This victory served as a stage for Jonathan David, who was given the opportunity to play as the lead striker following the absences of Alexander Sorloth and Julian Alvarez.
