A 30-year-old attorney allegedly involved in several high-profile gang-related cases in Johannesburg was shot dead in her vehicle in Eldorado Park on Monday.

Nadine Meintjies was one of two people killed when gunmen opened fire on a Toyota Urban Cruiser on the Klipspruit West off-ramp.

Police spokesperson Lt-Col Isaac Mudau said police received a call about the shooting on Monday.

β€œOn arrival at the scene, police found a Toyota Urban Cruiser with bullet holes on the driver’s door,” he said.

β€œTwo occupants, a woman in the driver’s seat and a man in the passenger seat, were found inside the vehicle. Both were certified dead by emergency services,” Mudau said.

Mudau said police are investigating two counts of murder. No arrests have been made.

Meintjies was an attorney at Dane von Branden Attorneys and was reportedly involved in several cases in Johannesburg, including gang-related cases in Eldorado Park.

Attorney Arno Spangenberg of Spangenberg Attorneys told TimesLIVE he knew Meintjies as a university student and as a colleague in the legal profession.

Though she was not employed by or affiliated with the firm, Spangenberg said they shared a connection from their student days and the legal profession.

β€œHer tragic passing is a painful reminder that no person, and particularly no member of the legal profession, should have to fear for their life while pursuing their profession and contributing to society,” he said.
