'Avengers: Endgame' Beats 'Avatar' as Highest-Grossing Movie - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the title of the highest-grossing movie of all time, edging past Avatar by less than $2 million.

The Marvel film was still $39 million behind after the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame Encore, but the re-release erased the gap after its second weekend. The re-release also includes new footage connected to Avengers: Doomsday, which opens December 18.

Disney's latest figures put Avengers: Endgame at $2.9255 billion worldwide, compared with $2.9237 billion for Avatar, leaving the Marvel film ahead by less than $2 million.

The two films have traded the top spot several times since Endgame first surpassed Avatar in 2019.

Avatar had held the record since its 2009 release before Endgame overtook it a decade later. The James Cameron film reclaimed the title in 2021 following a re-release in China, and subsequent re-releases have kept the two films close in worldwide box office earnings.

The latest shift in the rankings came after Avengers: Endgame Encore returned to theaters in late September. According to Disney, the re-release opened at No. 1 worldwide with an estimated $86 million in its first weekend and has earned about $126 million globally.

The new version includes additional footage connected to Avengers: Doomsday, giving audiences another reason to return to the 2019 blockbuster.

The re-release helped Endgame close the gap with Avatar and reclaim the top spot after two weekends.

The success of Endgame Encore comes just months before Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18.

According to Disney, the film will bring together characters from across the Marvel universe. Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, will return as Doctor Doom.

The Encore re-release also features footage connected to Doomsday, linking the theatrical return of Endgame to Marvel's next Avengers film.
