The White House’s new press secretary, Katie Zacharia, made headlines with a slip of the tongue during her first press conference. As she was speaking about her family and was about to address Donald Trump, the words that slipped out of her mouth created an unexpected moment at the podium.
Zacharia, whose appointment Trump had announced just four days earlier, appeared before reporters for the first time at the White House podium on Tuesday, October 13. When asked how she would manage her demanding job while her husband and children live in California, Zacharia began her response by emphasizing her family’s support.
“First of all, I’d like to extend a special thank you to my wonderful husband,” Zacharia said, before explaining that they have four children aged 12, 10, 8, and 6. While talking about her three sons, however, she couldn’t help but slip up.
“My president, excuse me, my husband” Zacharia said, correcting herself as soon as she realized her mistake. After a brief moment of confusion, the new spokesperson continued describing her family’s visit to Washington. Zacharia said her husband had brought their four children to the capital for two family birthday celebrations and also announced that her family would be moving to Washington.
During the press conference, which lasted about 14 minutes, Zacharia answered questions from three different media outlets. He then directed the reporters to Trump’s departure from the White House for a trip as part of his election campaign.
Standing behind Zacharia, Trump also assessed his new spokesperson’s performance at her first press conference. The U.S. President showed his support for Zacharia, saying, “I think she did a great job. She was very good.”
Before taking on the role of White House Press Secretary, Katie Zacharia worked as a communications advisor at Trump Media & Technology Group. Zacharia, who previously served in public affairs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, has also appeared on Fox News and Newsmax.
Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University in 2007 and completed her law degree at the same university in 2011. In a statement to reporters regarding her new role, she said, “I am deeply honored to serve as White House Press Secretary for President Trump and the American people.”
