Baker Mayfield injury update as Buccaneers QB dislocates thumb vs Vikings - USA Today

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield suffered an apparent injury to his throwing hand late in his team's Week 3 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Mayfield's injury occurred as he attempted a fourth-and-13 pass shortly after the two-minute warning. The veteran quarterback was trying to scramble backward away from pressure but eventually had to release a pass with several Vikings bearing down on him.

Mayfield got off a pass but was hit as he threw. His right thumb bent awkwardly after he attempted the pass, and he remained down after the play.

Mayfield received medical attention on the field following his play. He was able to walk off the field under his own power but was clutching his right hand. He headed straight for the blue medical tent for further evaluation.

Mayfield was not in on the Buccaneers' ensuing possession. Tampa Bay's backup quarterback, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels, took the field in his stead and threw an interception on a Hail Mary to end the Buccaneers' 23-16 loss.

Todd Bowles told reporters Mayfield had suffered a dislocated thumb during his postgame news conference after the Buccaneers' 23-16 loss to the Vikings.

"He's going to get an MRI tomorrow just to see exactly what inside is wrong with it," Bowles said. "So, we'll know more tomorrow."

Bowles also revealed initial X-rays of Mayfield's injury did not show a break of the quarterback's thumb.

The Buccaneers did not provide an in-game status update about Mayfield because his injury occurred in the contest's latter stages. He completed 17 of 34 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception and ran for six yards on two carries before leaving the game.
