Bandung Airport Reopens After Anak Krakatau Ash Disrupts Flights
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Husein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, resumed operations on Tuesday, September 8, after a temporary closure caused by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.
InJourney Airports Corporate Secretary Group Head Arie Ahsanurrohim said the airport's airside and landside facilities were ready to resume flight operations as of 12:42 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
"The reopening of Husein Sastranegara Airport took effect on September 8, 2026, at 12:42 a.m. local time," Arie said in a statement received in Bandung on Tuesday.
The airport carried out reopening procedures, including clearing volcanic ash from its airside facilities, such as the apron, taxiway and runway.
Airport authorities also conducted a runway friction test to assess the condition of the pavement. The results showed that the runway met the required safety and operational standards for flights to resume.
Arie urged passengers to check their flight status and schedules with their respective airlines before heading to the airport, as flight operations may still be subject to changes.
The temporary closure had affected passengers traveling to and from Bandung. Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan said some affected passengers switched to rail services, including the Whoosh high-speed train.
"Thankfully, everything went smoothly, both for those taking the Whoosh from Jakarta and those traveling from Bandung, whether eastbound or westbound. So, the trains are safe," Farhan said.
Farhan said no volcanic ash remained on the airport's runway. However, the presence of ash in the surrounding air had prevented flights from resuming at the time.
Airlines had also offered special arrangements for affected passengers, including options to reschedule flights or request refunds, he said.
