Bangladesh coast faces squally weather as deep depression persists

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is threatening rough weather along Bangladesh’s coast, with the Meteorological Department warning of squally winds and rain.

Meanwhile, local cautionary signal No. 3 has been advised to remain hoisted at the country’s four maritime ports.

Speaking to bdnews24.com on Wednesday, Meteorologist Kazi Jebunnesa said: "The depression may bring squally winds alongside rainfall to coastal areas.

“It could also have some impact on the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions."

The low-pressure system over the sea intensified into a depression on Monday evening, prompting authorities to hoist cautionary signal No. 3 at the four maritime ports.

On Tuesday, the Met Office confirmed it had upgraded to a deep depression and instructed the ports to maintain the signal.

According to a special weather bulletin issued on Wednesday, the deep depression over the north-west Bay and the adjoining westcentral Bay moved westward and currently remains over the same region.

At Wednesday noon, it was centred about 940km southwest of Chattogram port, 920km southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 755km southwest of Mongla port, and 785km southwest of Payra port.

It is likely to move further west-northwestwards and cross the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast of India during the day.

"Under its influence, squally weather may affect the maritime ports, the North Bay, and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh," the bulletin said.

It added that maximum sustained wind speeds within 48km of the deep depression centre were around 50km per hour, rising to 60kph in gusts or squalls.

The sea remains rough near the centre of the deep depression.

Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra maritime ports have been asked to keep local cautionary signal No. 3 hoisted.

Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the north Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
