Beerihundi Basavanna took charge as the new president of the Mysuru Rural District Congress Committee at a function held in the presence of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Mysuru on Sunday.

Mr. Basavanna is considered to be a loyalist of the former Chief Minister, who is also a Congress Working Committee (CWC) member.

Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah, who was also present, called upon the newly appointed president of the Mysuru Rural District Congress Committee to strengthen the party organisation by taking everyone into confidence and upholding the values of democracy, secularism, equality, and social justice.

Congratulating the new president of the party’s district unit, Mr. Yathindra said Mr. Basavanna was a grassroots leader who had risen through the ranks.

He said Mr. Basavanna had considerable experience, having served as a Gram Panchayat member three times, president of a Gram Panchayat once, a Zilla Panchayat member, and chairman of the local body’s standing committee.

“The Congress has now entrusted him with the responsibility of heading the district unit so that his experience can be utilised to strengthen the party organisation. His responsibility is now greater. He has to build the party by taking everyone into confidence and ensuring inclusiveness,” Mr. Yathindra said.

He expressed confidence that Mr. Basavanna, who had closely witnessed the problems faced by ordinary people from the Gram Panchayat level to the Zilla Panchayat, would successfully discharge the responsibility entrusted to him.

The Minister also praised and thanked outgoing district Congress president B.J. Vijay Kumar for his services to the party during his 13-year tenure as president of the Mysuru Rural District Congress Committee.

While former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presided over the event, MLAs K. Venkatesh, D. Ravishankar, Anil Chikkamadu, and Darshan Dhruvanarayan, and Legislative Council members D. Thimmaiah and K. Shivakumar were present alongside former MLAs M.K. Somashekar and H.P. Manjunath.
