Ben Johnson doubles-down on Bears being highest-scoring NFL offense - Bears Wire

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson set a lofty goal for the offense this season - to be the highest-scoring offense in NFL history. 

One way to deliver on that goal is to put up 59 points in the first game of the season, which is precisely what the Bears did in their opener against the Carolina Panthers. Following the 59-37 win, Johnson doubled-down on his previous statement, saying Chicago will always want to be the highest scoring offense, win games and win Super Bowls.

“That’ll always be the goal,” Johnson said. “We want to be the highest scoring, we want to have the most wins, we want to win Super Bowls.  That’s what we do.  We didn’t get into this profession trying to be mediocre or average.”

The current highest-scoring team in NFL history is the 2013 Denver Broncos, who scored an average of nearly 38 points a game. Even that team never put up 59 points in a game, although they got close with a 52-point game and two 51-point games.

After the season opening win, the 2026 Bears certainly appear to be a team who could be the top scoring offense in history by the time this season ends. However, they will face a test with the Minnesota Vikings who just defeated the Green Bay Packers by 17 points and generated two takeaways in the fourth quarter to fuel that win. Minnesota has not allowed at least 40 points in a game since 2022, before Brian Flores became their defensive coordinator.
