Ben Shelton not taking any time off after US Open final loss

Ben Shelton is wasting little time getting back on court after his run to the US Open final, with the American set to represent his country in the Davis Cup this week.

Shelton was named in the US Davis Cup team on Monday for their second-round qualifying tie against the Czech Republic in Prague. He will then join Team World for the Laver Cup in London the following weekend.

The 22-year-old lost to Alexander Zverev in his first Grand Slam final on Sunday. Despite the defeat, Shelton moved up to a career-high No. 4 in the ATP rankings on Monday.

The Davis Cup appearance will be Shelton's second for the United States and his first since the 2024 finals.

Learner Tien, Martin Damm, Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek were also named in the US team. Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul withdrew from the squad.

Tien reached the fourth round of the US Open, while Damm pushed eventual semifinalist Frances Tiafoe to five sets in the first round. The 20-year-old Tien and 22-year-old Damm will make their first Davis Cup appearances.

The US will face the Czech Republic on Friday and Saturday in a best-of-five tie on an indoor hard court at Prague's O2 Arena. Jakub Mensik, Jiri Lehecka, Tomas Machac and Vit Kopriva have been named in the Czech squad.

The winner will advance to the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy, in November.

Shelton will then head to London for the Laver Cup, where he will represent Team World. Zverev, who defeated Shelton in the US Open final, will represent Team Europe.

Several other leading players will also feature in Davis Cup ties this week, including Alex de Minaur for Australia, Stefanos Tsitsipas for Greece and Casper Ruud for Norway.

India will face South Korea, while other ties include Chile vs Spain, Britain vs Ecuador, Austria vs Belgium and Canada vs France.
