Bengaluru likely to receive light rainfall for next three days: IMD

A day after Bengaluru recorded its second-highest temperature for September (33.2°C), the city received a heavy downpour on Tuesday (September 15), recording 55.8 mm rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed this extreme weather condition as a local phenomenon as other parts of the State, including coastal and north-interior Karnataka, received no rainfall on Tuesday.
“The weather conditions that we are witnessing in Bengaluru are due to a localised phenomenon. There has been local convectional activity due to strong surface heating and abundant moisture in the atmosphere,” said IMD scientist C.S. Patil.
On Monday (September 14), the Bengaluru city observatory recorded 33.2°C, which is the second-highest recorded temperature for September and the highest in the last 10 years. The all-time record for September is 33.3°C, which was recorded in 1951, and the previous highest in the last decade was 31.7°C, recorded in 2018.
On Tuesday, the city received 55.8 mm rainfall for a 24-hour period. The all-time record for September is 177.6 mm rainfall, which was recorded in 1988, and in the last decade, 131.6 mm rainfall was recorded in 2022.
IMD said that the rainfall will not bring much respite from the heat.
“The rainfall on September 15 will not make much of a difference to the temperature as it is rain runoff, which means it won’t be absorbed into the ground,” Mr. Patil said.
He added that from September 19 or 20 onwards, there would be widespread rainfall across the State.
“In Bengaluru, for the next three days, there will be light rainfall. In some areas, there is no indication of heavy rainfall,” he added.
The IMD forecast of Bengaluru city and the neighbourhood for the next couple of days states that there would generally be a cloudy sky.
“Light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by gusty wind with a speed of 30-40 kmph are likely. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 31°C and 21°C respectively,” the forecast states.
