The Bengaluru South City Corporation has sealed 63 commercial establishments operating “illegally” in residential areas across its jurisdiction during a special enforcement drive conducted by officials.

The Corporation sealed the highest number of establishments in the BTM Layout Assembly constituency, where 30 shops were shut. This was followed by 10 in the Bengaluru South constituency, nine in Bommanahalli, eight in Padmanabhanagar, four in Jayanagar, and two within the limits of the Anekal Assembly constituency (part of which falls under the South City Corporation).

According to Corporation officials, the action targeted commercial establishments operating in residential areas in violation of regulations. Officials said they were causing inconvenience to residents and obstructing vehicular movement. Bakeries, eateries, condiment stores, salons, beauty parlours, fruit and vegetable outlets, hardware stores, and other commercial establishments were among those sealed.

The Corporation said commercial establishments operating on roads narrower than 40 feet in residential areas were prohibited. However, several establishments had continued operations without valid trade licences despite being issued notices and instructions to vacate.

The drive was conducted simultaneously across several wards in Kumaraswamy Layout, J.P. Nagar, Madiwala, Koramangala, Ejipura, Jakkasandra, Begur, Singasandra, Yelachenahalli, Uttarahalli, Gottigere, Bilekahalli and Arakere, among others.

Commissioner K.N. Ramesh warned of strict legal action against establishments operating illegally or without the necessary licences.
