Bengaluru traffic cop clears drain on flooded flyover as vehicles struggle to pass

A traffic cop in Bengaluru received a big round of applause online after a video showed him clearing a clogged drain himself while standing on the narrow edge of a heavily flooded flyover.

The video, shared on Reddit’s r/Bangalore, showed the officer using a stick to clear the drain as rainwater submerged the road. Cars, bikes and autos struggled to make their way through the deep water just beside him.

“Huge respect for this Bangalore traffic cop,” read the caption accompanying the post. The Reddit user praised the officer for going “way beyond his call of duty” but also questioned why a traffic cop had to risk his safety to deal with a drainage issue.

In the comments section of the post, several highlighted the Bengaluru traffic cop’s initiative while also pointing to the drainage and infrastructure problems in the city.

“We need to recognise and give this cop a promotion! While it is frustrating that the city’s infrastructure has failed miserably, watching him step up like this is a powerful reminder of what true, everyday heroism looks like. We need a lot more people with this kind of dedication,” one user wrote.

Another user said they had encountered similar waterlogging while running in their area and found that several submerged roads had drains nearby, but no outlets for the water to reach them until it overflowed onto the road.

One of the users described the officer’s actions as “empathy,” saying he appeared to have realised that clearing the water would help traffic move more freely and make traffic management easier.

“That is called empathy. That’s all it takes. A bit of empathy from everyone to make the world a better place. This man had no obligation to do this work. But then he saw how traffic had been piling up and calculated that if he just cleared the water, the traffic would flow freely,” the user wrote.- Ends
