A shift in-charge working at a Zomato warehouse in Bengaluru has come under fire after a video went viral showing him yelling at employees in Hindi and telling them to learn the language if they wanted to work with him or leave the job.

The video has triggered a language row, with an employee seen objecting to the use of Hindi and asking the shift in-charge to speak in Kannada.

In response, the shift in-charge says he does not know Kannada and will speak only in Hindi. He then tells the employees to learn Hindi if they want to work with him or leave the job.

"I don’t know Kannada. I'll speak in Hindi. If you’re going to come, learn Hindi and then come," he was heard saying in the video.

He also appeared to address two employees who had raised the issue, saying he has no problem if they leave. He further referred to Karnataka as a Kannada-speaking state and asked what difference that makes in the workplace.

The remarks have drawn backlash, particularly over the instruction to employees to learn Hindi despite working in Karnataka.

Following the circulation of the video and the ensuing backlash, a petition was filed with Bengaluru Police seeking action against the shift in-charge.

After the controversy escalated, the shift-in-charge apologised over the incident.- Ends
