Ilona W., who holds German and Ukrainian citizenship, is accused of working for the intelligence service of a foreign power, according to the Federal Prosecutor's Office.

Sheย was arrested on January 21 and remains in pre-trial detention.

Prosecutors say Ilona W. ran a marketing agency in Berlin and also chaired a lobbying association, giving her extensive contacts in military and political circles.

She allegedly had contact with a full-time Russian intelligence officer at the Russian Embassy in Berlin from at least October 2023.

According to the indictment, she repeatedly supplied him with information about high-profile events and helped arrange access for him, in some cases under a false name.

Prosecutors say the aim was to allow the Russian intelligence officer to build up his own network for intelligence purposes.

Ilona W. is also accused of attending events herself to identify useful contacts and potential targets.

Prosecutors say she tried to recruit people from Germany's Defense Ministry and the arms industry.

She also allegedly sought information on German defense policy and the defense industry on behalf of her Russian contact, particularly in connection with Russia's war against Ukraine.

The charges were filed last week before the state security division of Berlin's Higher Regional Court.

Germany expelled the suspected Russian intelligence officer linked to the case shortly after W.'s arrest, prompting Moscow to retaliate by expelling a German diplomat.
