Beyond disgusting: Actor Ayesha Khan slams moral policing in Jamui assault case
Actor Ayesha Khan has reacted strongly to the assault and harassment of two minors in Bihar’s Jamui, after a video of the incident surfaced online and triggered widespread outrage. The actor condemned the incident on her Instagram Stories and questioned the justification of ‘moral policing’.
“I genuinely feel sick watching what happened in Bihar. Imagine being surrounded, terrified and humiliated while people stand around watching and recording you. Stop calling this morality. Stop hiding harassment behind ‘culture’. This is pathetic and beyond disgusting,” Ayesha wrote.
In another Instagram Story, the Dhurandhar actor questioned those who defended the idea of moral policing while condemning the alleged assault. “Who asked for your solution? Who asked for moral policing? Who gave you the right? I can't believe some people are saying that the way of moral policing could have been done in a better manner. Who are you? Who asked you? What is even more scary is everyone around is recording and they thought it is okay to post this? So no fear? No realisation? No morals? Oh so these people need moral policing do they? Everyone but the monster is the problem, then what is the permanent solution?” Ayesha’s comments came after BJP MLA from Jamui Shreyasi Singh, while speaking to India Today TV, said that “moral policing can be done in a more decent and elegant fashion” and that the “mistreatment and mishandling” of the two teenagers was completely unacceptable.
The incident took place on September 19. The two Class 10 students, who are friends and attend the same coaching institute, had gone to a spot near Madwa hillock along the Jamui-Lakhisarai road after their classes to take photographs. They were returning on a scooter at around 7 pm when a group of local youths stopped them in the name of moral policing.
According to the police, the teenagers were abused and forced off their vehicle. The boy was beaten, while the girl was sexually assaulted. The group also recorded the incident and threatened the teenagers with further consequences if they reported it. The victims approached the police two days later, on September 21.
The video was subsequently circulated widely on social media, leading to public outrage. Police traced the teenagers with the help of a vehicle registration number visible in the footage.Main accused injured in police encounter
The police have arrested five of the seven accused identified in connection with the case. The latest arrests include alleged main accused Nandan Yadav and Hare Ram Yadav. Both sustained leg injuries during police action, according to the police.
Three other accused had been arrested earlier. A Special Investigation Team headed by Jamui SDPO Deepti Monali was formed to investigate the case and track down the remaining suspects.
Police have also launched a separate investigation into the circulation of the video. The Jamui Cyber Police Station has registered an FIR against around 120 social media profile holders for allegedly sharing the footage while revealing the identity of the minor victim.
