Bid to limit alcohol sales after midnight heads to Con Court - EWN
The DG Murray Trust is preparing to argue before the Constitutional Court over a Northern Cape High Court ruling that struck down parts of the province’s Gambling and Liquor Act of 2024 because of inadequate public consultation on extended alcohol trading hours.
The case reported on by the Sunday Times, comes as alcohol harm reduction campaigners call for a midnight cut-off for alcohol sales at venues serving customers on-site, warning that extended trading hours contribute to violence, road accidents and harmful drinking.
702 and CapeTalk's Africa Melane spoke to Kashifa Ancer, project lead of the DG Murray Trust’s Rethink Your Drink campaign. She said evidence showed a clear association between late-night alcohol sales and increased harm, particularly when trading continued into the early hours of the morning.
