A man from Bihar's Muzaffarpur, whose alleged murder had led to a police case nearly four years ago, has been found alive. Police investigation has revealed that man named Sonu Kumar had staged his own murder and sent an audio message and a blood-stained photograph to his family to make them believe he had been killed.

Police said Sonu had disappeared after leaving his home in November 2022. He had reportedly told his family that he was going to Patna to purchase supplies for his shop and was carrying around Rs 50,000 at the time.

The case took a dramatic turn on September 17, 2026, when Sonu reached the Deoria police station following sustained police action and raids. During questioning, he admitted that he had fabricated the murder story to conceal his romantic relationship from his family and stay away from them.HOW SONU'S 'MURDER' WAS STAGED

Sonu Kumar, a resident of the Thawe police station area in Gopalganj, left home on November 6, 2022. Three days later, on November 9, his brother Dheeraj Prasad Srivastava lodged a missing person complaint at the Thawe police station.

Soon after, Sonu's family received an audio message and a photograph from his mobile phone. The photograph showed blood flowing from a head injury, while the audio claimed that some people had assaulted and killed him while trying to snatch his money and bag.

Based on the information and evidence received by the family, a murder case was registered at the Devaria police station in Muzaffarpur.

A special police team was formed to trace Sonu and investigate the alleged murder. Despite extensive efforts, police could not find any concrete lead about his whereabouts for several years.POLICE LINKED DISAPPEARANCE TO LOVE AFFAIR

The investigation gained a new direction after police came across another case involving Sonu's romantic relationship.

The mother of a young woman had earlier lodged a case at the Thawe police station, alleging that her daughter had been abducted. As police investigated the two cases, they found a connection between the woman's disappearance and Sonu's murder.

Police investigation revealed that Sonu had run away to another state with the young woman. According to the police, he had then created a fake story about his own death to conceal the relationship from his family.

Following sustained police action and pressure, Sonu appeared voluntarily at the Deoria police station on September 17, 2026.POLICE ACTION AGAINST SONU

During questioning, Sonu reportedly told police that he had planned the fake murder drama to keep his romantic relationship hidden from his family and stay out of their sight.

The police are now initiating further legal action against Sonu for misleading the authorities and fabricating a false murder story that resulted in the registration of a murder case.- EndsWith inputs from Manibhushan SharmaPublished By: Tanu jainPublished On: Sep 18, 2026 18:25 IST
