BJP booth worker allegedly shot dead in West Bengal, killers yet to be traced

BJP booth-level worker identified as Chandan Bhalla, 46, was allegedly shot dead in the in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Sunday evening, police said.

Birbhum SP Vidit Raj Bhundesh said the man appeared to have been shot dead prima facie. He added that the exact cause of death would be established after the post-mortem examination, according to PTI.

According to Bhalla's family members, he received a phone call from an unidentified person before leaving his home. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and are working to trace those responsible.

Shyamapada Mondal, president of the BJP's Bolpur organisational district, said Bhalla was an "old and active worker" of the party.

"It is very unfortunate that our party worker has been shot dead. We want the police administration to act within 24 hours," Mondal said.

Further investigation is underway, while the motive behind the alleged shooting has not yet been established. - Endswith agency inputs
